About

Welcome! Its a pleasure to meet you. My name is Teresa Doniger. I live and work in Potomac, Maryland just outside of Washington, DC. I have several passions as a therapist. One is working with people whose lives have been impacted by grief and loss. Another is I enjoy supporting and assisting people who are experiencing life changes and transitions (starting a new job, starting graduate school, getting involved in a significant intimate relationship, etc) as well as companioning clients as they create their own path towards health, meaningful, and satisfying lives.

Treatment Approach
What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

My motivation to specialize in working with autistic/neurodivergent people is based in my experience with former clients who struggled in various aspects of their lives even as they were quite successful in some aspects of their lives. It seems to me there are a lot of missed opportunities for neurodivergent people due in part because of inaccurate diagnoses as well as the ways in which our society historically has not created space for non-neurotypical people to thrive and flourish as they are (who they are). My intention is to support clients as they navigate personal and professional challenges tied to neurodivergent traits, ways of being, and ways of operating and also to highlight strengths, gifts and talents at the same time.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

While I do not explicitly describe myself as neurodivergent, I have struggled in school and professionally due to what I call "ADD traits." Because I was perceived as being anxious, and at times experiencing depression, ADD was not focused on until I was in graduate school in my 40s. I have much compassion for people who are neurodivergent and I also have an interest in learning from each person in terms of how they have learned to adapt, be flexible, and hopefully practice self-compassion as well.
