About
Greetings! My name is Dr. Shanika Goodspeed, and I am here to serve. I am a licensed clinical and forensic psychologist in Virginia, and I work with clients throughout the U.S.My work is deeply rooted in helping people better understand themselves in a way that feels empowering, clear, and affirming. I specialize in psychological assessment, and I approach this work with a strong commitment to cultural humility, accuracy, and compassion.I understand that seeking an evaluation can come with a mix of emotions, including curiosity, uncertainty, hesitation, and even relief. My goal is to create a space where you feel seen, respected, and understood throughout the entire process. I take care to ensure that each evaluation is thorough, thoughtful, and tailored to your unique experiences, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.I believe that assessment is not just about answers, but about insight—helping you better understand patterns, strengths, and areas of growth in a way that is meaningful and actionable. It’s a privilege to be part of that process with you, and I look forward to working together.
My “why” for working with autistic and neurodivergent individuals is rooted in a deep commitment to understanding people as they are—not as they’re expected to be. Throughout my training and clinical work, I’ve seen how often minoritized individuals are misunderstood, overlooked, or forced into frameworks that don’t fully capture their experiences. That never sat right with me.I was drawn to this work because I value clarity, accuracy, and fairness in how we understand people. Psychological assessment, when done well, can be incredibly validating—it can provide language for lifelong experiences, highlight strengths that may have been missed, and offer a more compassionate lens through which to view oneself.I approach this work with a strong respect for neurodiversity and a commitment to culturally responsive care. My goal is to help create understanding—whether that brings confirmation, clarity, or even new questions. I aim to provide an experience where you feel genuinely seen, where your story is taken seriously, and where the outcome of the evaluation feels meaningful and useful to your life. It’s a privilege to be part of that process, and I don’t take that responsibility lightly.
I bring an affirming, strengths-based approach to my work by intentionally centering each person’s individuality, context, and lived experience. From the very beginning, I focus on understanding not just areas of difficulty, but the full picture—strengths, patterns, values, and the ways you’ve already adapted and navigated your environment. In my assessment process, I am thoughtful about how information is gathered, interpreted, and shared. I aim to highlight abilities, resilience, and unique ways of thinking just as much as I identify challenges. My goal is for you to walk away not only with answers but with a clearer sense of your strengths and how they can be leveraged in meaningful, practical ways.I also approach this work through a lens of cultural humility and awareness, recognizing that identity, environment, and systemic factors all shape how individuals experience the world and are understood within it. As a Black woman and member of the LGBTQIA+ community, this perspective is especially important to me, and I am committed to providing care that is respectful, inclusive, and affirming across diverse backgrounds.Ultimately, I strive to create an experience where you feel empowered, accurately understood, and supported in a way that aligns with who you are—not who you’re expected to be.
