Intro

Hello, my name is Owen McGonnell.  I live in Round Rock, Texas with my wife, and our pets.   I am licensed in Texas as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker so that I can provide mental health counseling and therapy.  I have enjoyed meeting and working, in a wide variety of settings, with interesting people with lots of different kinds of worries, hopes, and needs.  Another privilege has been getting to work with people of all ages, some as young as five years old, to seniors in nursing homes, and most of the ages in-between. I look forward to partnering with the people I see so that they can get back to feeling good about their lives today and have hope for  their tomorrows.

What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

Having ADHD myself, I have always wanted explanations for why I felt different for so much of my life.  Studying this condition and brain differences in general has helped me feel more in control and better about myself.  I often see a part of myself in the people I see and want very much for them to be able to discover their strengths and worth as I have.  It is a great privilege for me to help you find real answers to your questions and to help you to find new ways to live effectively.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

I learned from a group of young people I was working with some years ago to appreciate that everybody knows how to do something well and has something to contribute, even if others do not see it right away.  It became clear to me that whatever people are doing is their best way to improve things around them.  What most people need is a few more options about how to get done what they want to be able to accomplish.  People don't need to be “fixed”, but they might be able to use a guide to help them polish up their approach to life.  I enjoy being a person who has in some ways “been there”, who wants to lend a hand to others who are looking for their own kind of success.
