About

Hi! I'm Michelle. I've been helping people heal, learn, and grow for more than 20 years. I am a psychotherapist, coach, teacher, and author of the best-selling book "Scared Selfless", which explores the aftereffects of child abuse and how to heal from it. My greatest gift as a clinician is my well-founded optimism. I know that no matter how bad things may currently seem, my clients can overcome obstacles, process pain, and move on to happier, healthier, more purposeful lives. I believe that all people have an innate capacity to grow into their authentic selves; they simply need the right conditions. I pride myself on offering clients an experience that is validating, accepting, nurturing, and supportive. My writing about psychology has appeared in periodicals such as the New York Times, Time, People, Good Housekeeping, The Huffington Post, and Psychology Today, and I have been featured on Dr. Phil, The Dr. Oz Show, and in People magazine.

Education & Licensure
PhD, M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Saybrook University; BFA in Writing from New York University; Post-Baccalaureate in Psychology from UCLA
Treatment Approach
What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

My first experiences with neurodivergence came through psychotherapy work with clients. Time and again, I met wonderful people who struggled with aspects of autism and/or ADHD. In order to better understand and help my clients, I took specialized classes in neurodivergence. Nowadays, I often notice symptoms of neurodivergence in clients and recommend that they seek formal assessment. The goal is never to label a person with a disorder, rather it is to help a person better understand their own mind and how it uniquely functions. Neurodivergence brings certain challenges and also many gifts! My goal is to help clients understand, embrace, and better utilize their own minds.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

As a clinician, I was trained in Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology focuses on enhancing wellbeing by emphasizing strengths, virtues & positive experiences. Although neurodivergence can be challenging, I also see it as an opportunity to embrace uniqueness, cultivate resilience, and foster self-knowledge. I believe that self-knowledge has the power to lead to personal growth, improved relationships & a more fulfilling life.
