About

Greetings and Welcome! My name is Dr. Mary Jayne Sims, a licensed Clinical Psychologist in California with extensive experience serving individuals, families and professionals across the full spectrum of psychological care. At the heart of my work are three foundational beliefs: YOU are the expert on your own life and experience, YOU are not defined by a diagnosis, a number, or a statistic, and Respect, Understanding, and Exceptional Care are not extras — they are Your Rights!  My approach to assessment is comprehensive and deeply personal. I am committed to understanding all of you — your whole self — including your strengths, your challenges, and the rich cultural context that shapes who you are. This is not a one-size-fits-all process. It is a true partnership, built on trust and mutual respect, with one clear goal: to give you greater clarity about yourself and your needs so you can move forward with confidence and live the life you envision. My career has taken many forms — from providing psychotherapy in private practice to providing specialized training and consultation to mental health and medical providers — all united by a deep commitment to the people I serve. My work with professionals has centered on two areas I consider essential to quality care: examining one's own implicit bias and practicing genuine cultural humility.I look forward to working with you.

Treatment Approach
What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

After providing psychotherapy across all ages and a wide range of life challenges, and working alongside physicians, psychiatrists, social workers, and other mental health professionals, I became deeply aware of how much the process matters — not only the outcome of an evaluation or diagnosis, but how it is conducted, how results are communicated, and how you are made to feel throughout. It is my personal and professional belief that every person deserves to be valued for who they are — their individual ways of thinking, feeling, and navigating the world. I work from a strengths-based perspective, honoring what is already present while supporting the development of skills that enhance daily life and relationships. My commitment is unwavering: that every person I work with leaves with a clearer, deeper understanding of their own unique gifts — and the confidence to build a life that reflects them.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

Having personally experienced being "othered," judged, and misunderstood because of my race and learning style, I am deeply committed to offering others a fundamentally different experience. I work from a strength-based, affirming, and culturally humble foundation — one that honors your unique background, identity, and ways of knowing. This assessment is designed to meet you exactly where you are, recognizing that every mind works differently and that difference is a strength. Here you will find a warm, authentic, and genuinely safe space where you feel truly heard, validated, and understood — and where you are supported every step of the way in recognizing your strengths and realizing your full potential.
