About
Hi I’m honored you’re considering reaching out. My name is Mahkal Mathews, and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS). For over 20 years, I have had the privilege of walking alongside adolescents, adults, and families as they navigate their mental health and recovery journeys.
Clients often share that they experience me as warm, approachable, and genuinely supportive. I believe that meaningful change begins with feeling safe and understood, and I am committed to creating a space where you can show up just as you are without fear of judgment.
I support individuals facing challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, life transitions, addiction, relationship concerns, family dynamics, self-esteem, women’s issues, and parenting struggles. My work is rooted in compassion, trust, and deep respect for your unique story and strengths.
Wherever you may be on your journey, I would be honored to walk alongside you and support you in moving toward greater clarity, healing, and balance.
My commitment to working with neurodivergent and autistic adults began with a moment that changed how I understood communication. Early in my career, I worked with an autistic client who rarely spoke during sessions. Instead of focusing on increasing verbal expression, I shifted my approach and invited him to share his thoughts through writing. What emerged was insight, humor, and depth that had been overlooked simply because it didn’t fit conventional expectations. That experience reshaped my perspective it reinforced that the challenge is often not the individual, but the environment around them.
Since then, I have been motivated by a desire to create spaces where my clients are not pressured to mask or conform, but are supported in ways that align with how they naturally think, feel, and engage with the world. I value authenticity and collaboration, and I aim to center each person’s goals, strengths, and lived experiences in our work together. My role is not to “fix,” but to listen, adapt, and help build practical strategies that support autonomy, confidence, and meaningful connection.
My work is grounded in compassion, affirmation, and a deep respect for each person’s inherent capacity for growth. Rather than centering our work on problems, I focus on recognizing and building upon the unique strengths, resilience, and inner resources each individual already holds. I strive to create a supportive space where clients feel genuinely seen, heard, and valued, allowing them to explore their experiences with confidence and authenticity. Through attentive listening and thoughtful affirmation, I partner with clients in uncovering their abilities and expanding upon them, supporting their journey toward realizing their fullest potential while identifying the version of themselves they would to represent them in life.
