About

Hello, and welcome! My name is LeLaina Romero. I am a counseling psychologist licensed in North Carolina (Georgia license pending) and living in the Atlanta, Georgia area. I am also a spiritual director, singer, and songwriter. Whether working as a psychotherapist, professor, facilitator, or community musician, I have dedicated my time and energy to LGBTQIA+, BIPOC people, and those living at the intersections of those identities. Supporting people through the chronic stress and trauma of marginalization and oppression applies to my work with neurodivergent adults. To understand that we are whole and find spaces of belonging are deep needs that can be difficult to meet. My commitment is making this more possible for all of us.

Education & Licensure
PhD in Counseling Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University; Bachelors in Psychology and Music from Rollins College
Treatment Approach
What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

Those of us who do not conform to a mainstream way of being can be treated as problems and are constantly asked to change who we are to make others comfortable. I understand what it means to move through a world that wasn't built for you, and I understand the extraordinary strengths that can grow from that experience. I listen deeply to your lived experience and help tap into your inner wisdom. Being a human is complicated, and being a neurodivergent human in a world that wasn't built for you can intensify our struggles. It is possible to deepen your understanding of yourself and to use that understanding to broaden what is possible for you moving forward. We are collaborating to increase self-understanding and possibility in this process.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

My family journey with neurodivergence, especially as a parent, led me to deepen my learning and to specialize in working with neurodivergent adults. I was diagnosed with ADHD combined type (inattentive / hyperactive) as an adult, well after becoming a psychologist! I am connected with many friends and family members who are autistic and otherwise neurodivergent, and I have always deeply empathized with the emotional disregulation, sensory overwhelm, and needs for stimulation that can be so misunderstood, even by those who are closest to us. I help people understand the way they minds and bodies work, identify their support needs, and advocate for spaces that not only accommodate but accept and celebrate neurodivergence.
