About
Hello! My name is Dr. Kathryn Coker, and I’m so glad you’re here! Please call me Kathi. I have been in the mental health/psychology field since 1994, with a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University in Health and Human Development in 1992, a master’s degree in Counselor Education from University of South Florida in 1997, and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University in Sarasota in 2011. I have been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (FL) since 2000 and a Licensed Professional Counselor (NJ) since 2023. I treat a wide variety of issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and behavioral issues, plus I have years of experience working with the neurodivergent population. I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Choice Theory, EMDR, and Adlerian Psychology. I am energetic and compassionate, yet direct and inquisitive. I currently reside in Wesley Chapel, Florida (Tampa) with my husband and two teen sons. My daughter is a special ed teacher in Palm Beach County, FL. I look forward to connecting with you!
I took a job about 4 1/2 years ago that seemed interesting, and it evolved into something where the focus shifted to evaluating and treating neurodivergent children, teens and adults. We had no waiting list and could complete full evaluations in about 5-6 weeks, which is unheard of. I found myself diagnosing not only children and teens with ASD and ADHD, but also adults in their 20's, 30's, 40's and even 50's. The older adults would often cry when told they are on the spectrum, because it gave a name to why they struggled all those years. Many had mixed emotions, some anger, because they fell through the cracks and were now 25, and not keeping up with their peers. I found ways to show them hope and to make progress. Sometimes it was slow, sometimes not. I found my niche.
I now know that there is more variability among neurodivergent individuals than all of the world's neurotypical individuals combined. Each new client is a mystery I approach with openness and a warmth that I hope will encourage trust. I approach this population with wonder and curiosity, as I get to know each person's unique way of interpreting the world. I learn from them and slowly adjust my approach to harness their strengths and build on areas they avoid or fear. I want everyone I work with to feel heard, valued, and capable.
