About
Hello and welcome—I’m truly glad you’re here. My name is Kat Penwell Hughes, and I’m licensed to practice in Maryland. I believe that meaningful growth begins with curiosity, and I’m here to support you as we explore your unique experiences, perspectives, and goals. My path into this work was shaped by a deep fascination with human complexity and a desire to create spaces where people feel safe to ask questions, reflect, and discover new possibilities. I see our sessions as collaborative explorations—where your voice leads the way, your strengths guide the process, and your challenges are met with compassion and respect. Whether you're seeking clarity, connection, or simply a place to be understood, I’m committed to offering care that’s as thoughtful and individualized as you are.
My motivation for working with autistic adults comes from past experiences where the focus was often on “fixing something broken.” That approach never sat right with me. I believe that every person deserves support that celebrates who they are—not who others expect them to be. Neurodiversity is part of what makes this world vibrant, creative, and beautifully complex. I’m passionate about creating spaces where autistic individuals feel seen, respected, and empowered to thrive as their authentic selves. My goal is to walk alongside you, honoring your strengths and supporting your journey in a way that affirms your identity and fosters growth on your own terms.
I prioritize an affirming and strengths-based approach to ensure that every individual feels seen, valued, and empowered. I believe each client brings unique strengths and abilities that can be harnessed to navigate challenges and pursue personal goals. I actively listen to their experiences and validate their feelings, creating a space where they can express themselves authentically and without judgment. While I may not be a member of every demographic, I make it my personal mission to understand each person’s unique circumstances, cultural background, and lived experiences. I approach this work with humility, curiosity, and a deep respect for the diversity that shapes us.On a personal note, I find great joy in anime, manga, and K-pop—passions that were deeply enriched by the six years I spent living in Asia. I’m also well-versed in various types of gaming, from computer and board games to card-based strategy. These interests often help me connect with clients in creative and meaningful ways, especially when shared hobbies become bridges for trust and understanding. Admittedly, I'm always searching for my ''next big interest", so this list is not exhaustive!
