About

Hello and welcome! My name is John Stowe, and I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina, currently based in Greenville. I bring experience across private practice, university, and community clinics, as well as career development. I have had the privilege of supporting adults, students, older adults, and adolescents through many of life’s more challenging seasons. As a therapist, I strive to create a compassionate, affirming, and collaborative space where you feel heard, respected, and supported. My approach is practical, person-centered, and strengths-based, and my goal is to partner with you as you build insight, manage stress and anxiety, strengthen emotional well-being, and move toward a more grounded and meaningful life.

Education & Licensure
Ph.D. Candidate in Counselor Preparation and Research at East Carolina University; Master of Science in Counselor Education, East Carolina University; Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, East Carolina University.
Treatment Approach
What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

I bring an affirming, strengths-based approach, starting from the belief that you are not broken or in need of “fixing.” You bring strengths, values, abilities, and lived experiences that deserve to be understood and honored. In our work together, I will listen closely, respect your pace, and collaborate with you to identify what supports you, what drains you, and what helps you feel more grounded and connected. I draw on approaches such as strengths-based/solution-focused therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based practices, while adapting therapy to your needs, preferences, and goals. My hope is to help you build on what is already within you while developing practical tools for daily life, relationships, emotional well-being, and personal growth.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

My motivation for working with neurodivergent clients comes from a deep respect for the many ways people think, feel, communicate, connect, and experience the world. Across my work in counseling, education, and community-based settings, I have seen how often people are misunderstood when care focuses only on challenges or deficits. I believe therapy should be a place where you do not have to mask, over-explain, or become someone you are not in order to feel accepted. I am drawn to this work because I want to help you feel understood, recognize your strengths, make sense of your experiences, and move toward a life that feels more authentic, manageable, and meaningful to you.
