About
Hello! It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Dr. Jim Carter, a clinical psychologist based in San Diego and licensed in California. I’m passionate about supporting individuals who are seeking deeper self-understanding and personal growth. In every professional role I take on, I aim to bring collaboration, compassion, and integrity to my work. I believe that open, two-way communication—through questions, feedback, and shared insight—is essential to building trust and achieving therapeutic outcomes. I look forward to connecting and working with you.
My motivation for supporting neurodivergent persons is inspired by both personal and professional experiences. In terms of personal experiences, I share that my family is neurodiverse, and out of respect for others' privacy, I limit details. My professional perspectives have shifted across my career since being licensed in 1999, and I am now more focused on the longer-term impact and sustainability of my efforts. Working with Prosper makes sense because I have observed great benefit from persons developing greater understanding of themselves, and I support their overall mission.
My professional development and approach is rooted in person-centered approaches that emphasize honoring client autonomy, empowerment, and affirmation of unique strengths. Since 2008, I have been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, an international organization dedicated to promoting those principles within helping professions. The services I provide are for and with my clients, with the understanding that my goal is to empower them to navigate their own path.
