About

Hello, and welcome! My name is David Ellis. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia and South Carolina, with a background in both business and mental health. My path to counseling was not a traditional one, but my personal and professional experiences have shaped how I approach therapy.

‍

I believe therapy should be a conversation, not a lecture. My approach is practical, direct, and supportive, with a focus on understanding what you are experiencing and identifying realistic ways to move forward. I use evidence-based approaches while recognizing that no two people experience life's challenges in the same way.

‍

My goal is to provide a comfortable, judgment-free environment where you feel heard, respected, and comfortable being yourself. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or major life changes, we will work together to understand what is happening, build on your strengths, and develop skills to help you make meaningful changes in your life.

Education & Licensure
Master of Business Administration (MBA, 2015); Master of Science in clinical therapy from Thomas university; PhD in Clinical Psychology, Fielding Graduate University (currently pursuing).
Treatment Approach
What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

My interest in working with autistic and neurodivergent individuals is personal. As the father of an autistic son, I have experienced firsthand the challenges families face when trying to understand their child's needs, find appropriate support, and navigate a world that does not always recognize or understand neurological differences. Those experiences played a significant role in my decision to leave the business world and pursue a career in mental health.

‍

I believe autism is not something to be fixed. Each person has their own strengths, challenges, and way of experiencing the world. My approach focuses on understanding the individual rather than trying to make someone fit society's expectations.

‍

I also recognize that being neurodivergent affects more than one area of life. Relationships, communication, emotional regulation, employment, and self-esteem are often interconnected. My goal is to help clients better understand themselves, develop practical skills, build meaningful relationships, and improve their quality of life while respecting who they are.

‍

I bring both professional training and personal experience to my work. Most importantly, I believe in listening first, understanding the person behind the diagnosis, and working together to identify what a meaningful and fulfilling life looks like for them.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

I believe effective therapy starts with understanding the person, not focusing on a diagnosis. Everyone brings their own strengths, experiences, and perspectives to the conversation. My role is to help clients recognize those strengths and build on them while addressing areas where they want support or change.

‍

I take a practical, straightforward, and collaborative approach to therapy. I listen, ask questions, and work with clients to identify what is working in their lives and what they would like to improve. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, especially when working with autistic and neurodivergent individuals. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another.

‍

As both a counselor and the parent of an autistic son, I understand the importance of respecting individual differences rather than expecting everyone to think, communicate, or behave in the same way. My goal is not to change who someone is, but to help them better understand themselves, develop confidence, strengthen relationships, and build practical skills for everyday life.

‍

Above all, I believe therapy should be a place where clients feel comfortable being themselves, without judgment or pressure to meet someone else's expectations.
