About
Hi! I am Dr. Brooks and I hope I can be of help to you. I live outside Atlanta now but am originally from Dallas/Ft. Worth. I often tell my patients that they are not a diagnosis or a test score. There is only one of you in existence and my job is to help you figure out who that is, what you want/need, how you got here, and hopefully what you want for your future. This is a collaboration and we are working together to achieve your goals. I have a set of professional and personal experiences and talents, but only the patient should direct the course and direction of the assessment or therapy.
Starting in my training and practice, the community autistic/neurodivergent have always been my favorite patients. This population makes me happy and make me smile, even when we are struggling together to solve something. As a whole, they are require me stop taking myself seriously and listen as they always surprise me with something unexpected or unique. They make me want to help them solve their problems or reach their potential and that helps me enjoy my work and be a better psychologist/person.
In working with anyone, we as a therapeutic community focus excessively on diagnosis and negative signs and symptoms. Especially with this population, we should be focusing on strengths and abilities our patients have in exceptional ways and functions. The first step in this is talking to patients and finding out what those are and how we can adapt them to becoming more functional, happy, and productive as well as minimize negative thoughts, feeling and patterns as best we can.
