About

Hello! I'm Dr. Camille Carson-Bane, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Virginia with over 13 years of experience working across the continuum of behavioral healthcare, including group homes, intensive in-home services, acute psychiatric hospitals, long-term psychiatric care, outpatient practice, and comprehensive psychological assessment.

I specialize in psychological evaluations for adults seeking greater understanding of themselves, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental differences. My assessment style is collaborative, conversational, and educational. I believe an evaluation should feel like a partnership—not an interrogation—and I strive to create a welcoming environment where you feel comfortable sharing your experiences.

In addition to neurodevelopmental evaluations, my background includes working with individuals experiencing OCD, chronic pain and medical conditions, anxiety, trauma, gender identity exploration, and major life transitions. These experiences have reinforced my belief that every person's story is unique and deserves to be understood within the context of their life experiences, strengths, and challenges.

Whether you're exploring questions you've had for years or seeking clarity for the first time, my goal is to provide a thoughtful, evidence-based evaluation that helps you better understand yourself and equips you with meaningful recommendations for moving forward.

Treatment Approach
What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

Throughout my career, I've seen how often autistic adults—especially women and individuals who have learned to mask their differences—are overlooked or misdiagnosed because they don't fit traditional stereotypes of autism. Many have spent years being told they're "just anxious," "too sensitive," or "overthinking," while quietly working much harder than others to navigate everyday life.

I became passionate about adult autism evaluations because I believe everyone deserves to understand themselves through an accurate and compassionate lens. For me, an evaluation is about much more than determining whether someone meets diagnostic criteria. It's an opportunity to connect the dots, recognize lifelong patterns, and help people make sense of experiences that may have never fully been understood.

My goal is for every client to leave feeling understood, empowered, and hopeful. Whether the evaluation confirms autism or points toward another explanation, I want you to walk away with greater clarity, practical recommendations, and a deeper understanding of your unique strengths. I believe that knowledge fosters self-compassion, and that understanding yourself is often the first step toward building a life that feels more authentic and sustainable. I don't believe in searching for labels—I believe in seeking understanding. A diagnosis is only meaningful when it helps someone better understand themselves and access the support they deserve.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

I believe the most meaningful evaluations are those that help people better understand themselves—not simply determine whether they meet criteria for a diagnosis. My approach is collaborative, affirming, and strengths-based, with an emphasis on recognizing the unique ways each person's brain works rather than focusing solely on areas of difficulty.

During the evaluation process, I strive to create a space where clients feel comfortable sharing their experiences openly and authentically. I take time to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and understand each person's story within the context of their life, culture, relationships, and personal strengths. Rather than viewing autism through a deficit-based lens, I recognize the creativity, resilience, problem-solving abilities, and unique perspectives that many autistic individuals bring to the world.

As a Black woman and psychologist, I also recognize that culture, identity, gender, and lived experiences can shape how neurodivergence presents and how often it is recognized. I am committed to providing culturally responsive, neurodiversity-affirming care that acknowledges these differences and helps clients feel seen, respected, and understood.

My hope is that every client leaves with more than a report—they leave with greater self-understanding, confidence, and practical recommendations that support them in building a life that honors who they are.
