About

Hi! I’m Dr. Andolyn Medina Powell (pronounced On-duh-lynn).  I am a Virginia-licensed clinical psychologist and earned my Psy.D. from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.I am passionate about helping individuals better understand themselves, find their voice, and reach their full potential.  As a clinician, I believe in the importance of collaboration and providing individualized, compassionate care within an affirming, safe, and supportive space.  While a diagnosis can provide a sense of clarity, validation, and belonging, I believe there is so much more to your story, and I want you to feel understood, and celebrated for the person you are beyond a label.  It is my hope that through our assessment work together, you feel truly seen, comfortable exploring your experiences, discovering your strengths, and ultimately, be able to step outside of your comfort zone through understanding what makes you, you.

Treatment Approach
What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

My motivation for working with neurodivergent clients stems from a deep desire to ensure that every person feels seen, understood, and affirmed in their lived experience. I resonate with the feeling of experiencing the world differently from those around you and recognize the isolation that can accompany that sense of difference. I am also mindful that many individuals go undiagnosed for years due to factors such as their backgrounds, individual circumstances, and the ways they have learned to mask their experiences to navigate the world. Through providing compassionate, neuroaffirming care, I hope to create a space where individuals can better understand themselves, embrace their unique ways of being, and ultimately feel at home within their own minds and bodies.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

Providing affirming, strength-based care is integral to everything I do. I believe that while a diagnosis can be validating, it can sometimes lead us to focus on perceived deficits or the ways we differ from others, rather than recognizing how those differences can also be sources of strength. In my work, I strive to help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves, with self-acceptance serving as a foundation for navigating challenges and pursuing their personal goals. My approach balances affirmation with gentle challenge, recognizing that both are essential to growth. I often say, “Find your comfort zone, then get out of it.” I believe meaningful growth happens when we feel safe enough to explore beyond what is familiar, and that creating a foundation of trust, acceptance, and psychological safety is what allows that growth to occur.
