About

Hi there! My name is Dr. Amar Saxena (he/they). I am a clinical psychologist licensed in North Carolina and proudly call the Triangle area of NC home. I am also a member of PSYPACT, which allows me to provide virtual services in 40+ states. I have worked with the LGBTQ+ community for most of my clinical career, and have specialized training & a passion for working with trans/gender diverse and BIPOC clients. My goal is for you to feel safe, heard, understood, accepted, and supported as you move through your unique process of healing and growth, especially as you gain increased awareness and understanding of yourself and your (important) place in this world. My clinical work is always deeply informed by social justice, liberation, and feminist frameworks and I continue to work hard to decolonize the theory and practice of psychology. In my time away from work, I enjoy being in nature, tending plants, kayaking, chasing my sweet old man cat, travel, stargazing, and spending time with my partner and vibrant queer community.

Education & Licensure
PhD in Clinical Psychology from Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, MI; BS in Psychology from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA
Treatment Approach
What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

Neurodivergence is a specialty I fell into sideways through my extensive work with TGNC clients in private practice. The overlap is not very well understood yet, but I hope to help change that someday! I have always been a fierce supporter of diversity in all forms and began to develop a niche in differentiating autism, ADHD, and complex PTSD among clients in my local community. Many of my loved ones and dear community members identify as neurodivergent in some way or another, and I have seen their struggles firsthand in trying to understand themselves and find their way. I know we live in an unjust world that wasn't made for anyone who is seen as "different," and my sincere hope is that we can all work to break down systemic barriers together. You deserve to thrive and experience holistic well-being just as much as anyone else does.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

As a queer, trans, and likely neurodivergent person of color myself, I truly believe that every single person has something to offer. Our unique perspectives are beautiful, powerful, and important - I celebrate them all! I love to get curious with my autistic/neurodivergent clients and look at things from different angles to help you understand and tap into your gifts. I strive to listen with intention, validate your experiences, and create a safe space where you can show up authentically. Too often we are made to feel "less than" or like a burden, but if you're reading this, please know that's just ableism or trauma at work! I know you are worthy and valuable. I hope we can start to shift those harmful narratives together and help you move towards healing and building resilience.
