Intro
Hello. My name is Dr Daniel Marston and I am a psychologist licensed by PSYPACT which allows me to provide telepsychology services to people in over 40 states. My clinical work focuses largely on the intersection of neuropsychology and behavioral psychology. This led to me working with neurodivergent individuals over twenty years ago and it has been one of my most rewarding specialy areas. I have provided trainings on understanding autism to licensed professionals in over a dozen states and am the author of the book "Autism and Independence" which focuses on using behavior therapy to help neurodivergent individuals obtain their highest level of independence.
My clinical work has always emphasized the intersection of clinical neuropsychology and behavior therapy. Understanding how best to help people whose behaviors are impacted by neurology that works different from others has been a major part of that work. This led to my starting work with individuals diagnosed with autism and helping them recognize how to function best with behaviors that other people see as different. What I found most rewarding about this field is that it allows me to work with people who often feel judged by others but really are dealing with being different rather than impaired. Helping people learn how best to navigate a world where people often judge differences as problems has been very rewarding and one of the major things that I try to do when providing comprehensive assessments.
I feel very strongly that any work helping individuals with autism needs to focus on individual strenths rather than just problems. This strongly requires that the focus be on identifying strengths of the individual and even acknowledging that autism itself carries with it potential areas of strength. This does not mean in any way that I ignore problems that people face as I realize that is most often the reason people come in for assessment and therapy. What I emphasize is an approach that looks at both problems the person faces and what personal strengths they have that can help them overcome any challenges. In my opinion that is the only effective approach for both assessment and therapy.
